Before Covid-19, we relied heavily on our environments to guide our tasks. We studied at school and the library, we worked at the office, and relaxed on the couch.
The truth is, we have no idea when the pandemic will end. So, we cannot wait for it to.
Instead of waiting, you have a unique opportunity to return to the world better than you were before the lockdown. To do this, you must begin with your health which is split into two parts: mental health and physical health. They are two halves of a whole, so helping one will help the other. If you need to begin with one, physical health is a lot easier to begin with and can give your mental health a boost. Neglecting these will make your experience during the pandemic increasingly difficult.
Next, you must maintain your home; your sole space to do all the tasks you used to complete in different places. It is important to divide your space into four sections: exercise, sleep, recreation, and creation.
Your exercise space does not need to have any equipment, it just needs to be empty. You can get equipment eventually, but in the meantime there are plenty of bodyweight exercises online that can help you. Being physically active is essential, so be mindful of the minimum amount of time you spend here.
Your sleep space is your bed. Sleeping can be difficult at times. Unlike exercising, you cannot instantly fall asleep. The important thing is that you do not degrade your bed so do not use social media while in it and do not eat while in it. Sometimes, you need to distract your brain to be able to sleep so you can read for a little while, but if it does not yield within 30 minutes, leave and return. It is imperative that you respect this area. Additionally, use an alarm. You can set it for any time, but the idea is that you wake up at the same time every day to maintain structure.
Your recreation space is somewhere like your couch. There, you can engage with entertainment that you enjoy, it can be leisurely, and you can play games. This should be a refreshing place, but it is easy to spend too much time here. Keep an eye on the maximum amount of time you allot for yourself, and the quality of the time spent here.
Your last space is your creation space. There, you create the things you value. This will vary drastically from person to person, but it is a space to study, research, practice skills, play an instrument, craft, code, cook, etc.. Especially respect this station and keep it clear of everything except what you need to work on. Like your sleep space, if you find yourself getting distracted, leave to other stations to watch videos or eat for instance, and then return. Respect the space for what it is, because it is at this station where you can improve yourself the most.
“Maintain the stations, and the stations will maintain you.”
