Presentation: Fall 2018

Artists/ Designers/ Citizens Symposium

The practice and study of art and design as central to the meaning, acts, and affinities known as citizenship

Hosted by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), the 2018 Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) Symposium, Artists/Designers/Citizens, takes place November 7–9, 2018, in Chicago, on the Art Institute of Chicago’s school/museum campus. Artists/Designers/Citizens positions the practice and study of art and design as central to the meaning, acts, and affinities known as citizenship.

Ms. Kovic will present in the symposium's  most innovative format: Murmurs and Manifestos intended to be less cohesive overall, encouraging more voices and ideas to be tested and heard. Performative and experimental presentations, including artistic interventions that do not easily conform to the highly language-based, panel/presentation format, are part of this unique presentation. Patricia's presentation will be based on her most recent paper

WHY engage with extreme users HOW to engage extreme users Designers engage with users (people!) to understand their needs and gain insights about their lives. They also draw inspiration from their work-arounds and frameworks. When you speak with and observe extreme users, their needs are amplified and their work-arounds are often more notable. This helps you pull out meaningful needs that may not pop when engaging with the middle of the bell curve. However, the needs that are uncovered through extreme users are often also needs of a wider population.
